Project Summary:

Afar Cluster is Edukans’ leading strategic partner in Afar regional State. The cluster comprises of our organization Kelem and Afar Pastoral Development Association (APDA) as members. The cluster largely helps to avoid duplication of effort, share experience, resourcse and create synergy to achieve communal objectives.

Kelem is the lead of the cluster and has been serving as a lead for the last five years.

The cluster was formed with goal of promoting quality basic education for all to contribute to the ongoing efforts for the overall socio-economic transformation of the region in particular and the country at large.

The project was implemented in Chifra and Addar districts of the region with a fund from ICCO Cooperation and Edukans Foundation of the Netherlands.

The project includes major activities such as the construction of full-fledged Alternative Basic Education Centers, expansion and Upgrading of ABECs, furnishing of the schools with required type and quantity of school furniture, delivery of scholastic materials and provision of short term and long term in-service trainings for teachers and various awareness raising trainings and workshops for communities, and project stakeholders at all levels.

The overall costs of the project was Euro 400,000 and successfully implemented for five years and handed over to the local government upon completion of the project period. By now, all schools that were constructed and run by the project for the last five years are being run by the local governments of respective districts ensuring the sustainability of the project and reaching out more number of children and adults for many years to come.
