Project Summary:
Kelem has successfully implemented Telalak Alternative Basic Education (ABE) Project in Telalak wereda/District of the Afar National Regional State. The project was operational from 2005- 2008. The project was carried out with fund from and in partnership with Action Aid Ethiopia; the local office of the UK based Development Organization. Kelem constructed, furnished and established six Alternative Basic Education (ABE) centers in six kebeles of the wereda and run for four years. Kelem’s intervention in the woreda was the first successful effort exerted to create access to Afar Pastoralist Children education in remote areas of the Woreda. After completing its project life time, Kelem had successfully handed over the centers to the local government. Currently four out of six are upgraded to full cycle elementary (1-8 grades) school and the remaining two centers have been providing educational service for first cycle primary school students (from grade 1-4). Students, who had got access to education for the first time by Kelem’s project, have taken grade ten National examination and have joined prepatory schools in the current academic calendar.
