The recent launch of the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system project in Dessie and Kombolcha hospitals marks a significant step toward modernizing healthcare service delivery. For years, healthcare providers have faced persistent challenges, including inefficient paper-based record systems, delays in patient data retrieval, and limited coordination among departments. These issues have not only slowed down service delivery but also affected the overall quality of patient care.
Recently, Kelem Ethiopia has officially launched an electronic medical records (EMR) system project at Dessie Referral Hospital and Kombolcha General Hospital, marking a significant milestone in strengthening digital health systems in the region. The official launch event took place in Kombolcha Town, bringing together regional bureau representatives, health officials, hospital management teams, medical professionals, and other key project stakeholders.
Modernizing Healthcare Services with Digital Medical Records In collaboration with TERRA TECH and national and regional government partners, Kelem Ethiopia is implementing a comprehensive initiative aimed at enhancing healthcare service quality and strengthening service delivery capacity in the two public hospitals. The project focuses on the design and implementation of a modern Electronic Medical Records (EMR) system that replaces traditional paper-based processes.

The newly introduced EMR system project is designed to address the critical gaps by streamlining data management, improving accuracy, and enabling faster access to patient information. By digitizing medical records, the project aims to enhance clinical decision-making, reduce errors, and ultimately improve patient outcomes. As Dessie and Kombolcha hospitals embrace this digital transformation, the initiative stands as a promising model for strengthening healthcare systems and reducing the burden on both providers and patients.
The two-year project seeks to modernize hospital operations by transitioning to a fully digital and paperless EMR platform. This transformation is expected to improve operational efficiency, enhance data accuracy, and support the delivery of timely, coordinated, and high-quality healthcare services.

The EMR system is being introduced in response to long-standing challenges related to manual record-keeping, data loss, service delays, and limited access to reliable health information. By digitizing patient administration and medical records, the project will strengthen service quality and accelerate the digital transformation of hospital systems.
The initiative will significantly improve the accessibility, accuracy, and security of patient information, enabling healthcare professionals to make informed clinical decisions and improve continuity of care.
Strengthening Institutional Capacity for Sustainable Impact
Beyond technological advancement, the project places strong emphasis on institutional capacity building. Hospital staff will receive targeted training on digital health systems, data management, and effective system utilization to ensure successful adoption and long-term sustainability.
Strengthening internal systems and human capacity is central to building resilient public health institutions capable of meeting increasing service demands while maintaining quality standards.
Key Features of the EMR System
The EMR system will enable healthcare professionals to securely record, access, and manage patient information in real time. Key features include the following:
- Real-time access to patient medical records
- Improved coordination among hospital departments
- Reduced delays caused by manual documentation
- Enhanced reporting, monitoring, and data management
- Reduce medical errors and
- Enhance accountability while improving overall efficiency

Expected Impact of the Project
The implementation of the EMR system is expected to:
- Improve efficiency and reduce administrative workload
- Enhance the accuracy and availability of patient data
- Minimize data loss and duplication
- Reduce operational costs associated with paper-based systems
- Improve the quality and continuity of patient care
Speaking at the launch event, Abdulaziz Arage, Director of Kelem Ethiopia, emphasized that the TERATECH-supported project is a critical step toward modernizing medical record management systems. He noted that transitioning to a digital platform will strengthen service quality and accelerate digital transformation in patient administration across public hospitals.
In this project, more than 1,600 hospital staff in Dessie and Kombolcha hospitals will directly benefit from this EMR system. Patients will also benefit through faster, more accurate, and improved care efficiency and reduced treatment errors.
