“Optimizing Waste Management Solutions Through Strategic Equipment Deployment
Kelem Ethiopia is proud to announce the successful distribution of essential plastic waste management equipment to enhance environmental sustainability and create job opportunities for unemployed youth in several northeastern Ethiopian cities. The initiative, which took place at Kelem’s Job Oriented Youth Skills (JOYS) training center in Kombolcha, has provided critical resources to young entrepreneurs through the provision of six plastic waste squeezing machines, six three-wheeled mini trucks, over 900 collection sacks, and personal protective equipment (PPE) for waste management operations.
The distribution ceremony, attended by local mayors, regional representatives, and various stakeholders, celebrated the empowerment of 360 youths organized under diverse enterprises in Dessie, Kombolcha, Bati, Kemissie, Haik, and Woldiya. In addition to the equipment, Kelem has installed 100 street-side waste collection boxes specifically designed for the segregation of organic and plastic waste. This initiative not only supports waste collection efforts but also promotes environmentally sound practices within the communities.
Funded by the #Bundesministerium für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung (BMZ), #TERRA TECH Förderprojekte e.V., and #Aktion Deutschland Hilft, this project aims to foster sustainable employment opportunities within the plastic waste collection and recycling sector. Through this initiative, Kelem Ethiopia seeks to significantly enhance environmental protection efforts and contribute to the cleanliness and sustainability of the targeted cities.
Moreover, Kelem has prioritized community engagement by providing extensive training not only for the youth but also for municipal staff and 60 community facilitators. This training focuses on effective waste management strategies, raising awareness, and promoting best practices among community members.
